Don't over torque your lug nuts!

Turns out the previous owner over torqued the lug nuts. All four studs sheared off. I did a nice controlled drift into the nearest parking lot, and got to talk to all the crazies while I waited for a tow. One kid showed up ready to put new lugs in. He had jack stands and everything. The drum looks ok, so it should be up and running tomorrow evening.

Damn! Good thing you came out unharmed.

"One kid showed up ready to put new lugs in. He had jack stands and everything", Thought that kind of thing just happened in the movies.

Looks as if just the studs need to be replaced. The tow truck driver did a really good job o getting it on the flatbed.

it was bizarre. He comes up to and says, "let's do this right now bro, I have tools, jacks, jack stands...". I tell him the studs are sheared off in the hubs and I dknt have any on me and he point ast the oreilly's down the street and says "let's glnget them". I told him I really appreciated him stopping but that the tow truck was on its way. In my younger years I toy would have done it there, but I didn't want him to sue me if he got hurt helping me.

That is strange, would've thought you'd need at least a press, blow torch and maybe remove the axle? Give him points for spotting a business op. Unless he wanted to rob you, then minus points apply.

They thread in from the back of the hub. As long as the ends of them are t too screwed up I should be able to thread them out. He seemed More like he just really liked helping people. His truck was filled with tools. It's like those kids that pretend they're soldiers. Well this kid was pretending he was a tow truck driver. I thought it was pretty cool of him as if he knows what he's doing he could save someone broken down on the side of the road a lot of money.

Just reminded me of when I owned beetles, they have bolts as opposed to studs. Bloody good fun wrestling the big old 15" 5 bolt wheels back on to the drum with no lugs to locate it, Why do punctures happen when it's cold and/or pissing down with rain or worse?

Yeah, that's how my FIAT is. That would suck to remove.

Lol, I totally would have done it then and there. I've been the guy to stop before when on the way back from the track with my jack and tools. Repairs are always more satisfying when performed under sketchy circumstances.

That is true. If I wasn's around the corner from my house it would have been more tempting.

That's how one of my younger brothers are. During snow storms he has towed so many cars out of ditches, checks on all the parents and grandparents to make sure they have everything, and so on. I'm glad people like this are still around. I have a ton of respect for them.

Wow - and I thought the worst thing that happened was needing to call AAA to remove your flat tire. Or warping the rotors on an AW11 if you use any more than precisely 76 lb-ft of torque. Because they did that.

Glad you're OK!

Yeah. I'll be swapping out all the studs today. Everything else looks good so it should be gtg by tomorrow.

Glad to hear it wasn't too serious.

Unrelated: you should stick a GoPro in that car and post the vid so we Jalops know what the glorious warble of the Corvair Six sounds like!

I HATE when they over-torque the wheels. Sadly, most shops, and even the dealers, do that shit :(

The places I know of to actually torque it correctly are Walmart, Discount Tire, and possibly Mavis Tire.
